What Is Geisha Coffee?
Geisha (also spelled Gesha) is a coffee variety originally from the Gori Gesha forest in Ethiopia. It was brought to Panama in the 1960s, largely forgotten, and then rediscovered in 2004 when a Panamanian producer entered it in a competition — and it won by a margin that shocked the industry.
Since then, Geisha has become the most sought-after and highest-priced coffee variety in the world. It's now grown in Panama, Colombia, Brazil, Ethiopia, and beyond.
Why Is It So Expensive?
Several factors drive Geisha's price:
- Low yield — Geisha plants produce fewer cherries than standard varieties, meaning less coffee per hectare
- Fragility — the plants are more susceptible to disease and require more careful management
- Demand — global demand from specialty buyers, collectors, and competition circuits far exceeds supply
- Competition performance — Geisha consistently dominates Cup of Excellence and World Brewers Cup competitions, which drives auction prices up
Top Panama Geisha lots have sold at auction for over €1,000/kg. Even accessible Geisha lots from Colombia or Brazil command significant premiums.
What Does Geisha Actually Taste Like?
At its best, Geisha is unlike any other coffee. The flavour profile is typically:
- Floral — jasmine, bergamot, rose
- Fruity — peach, apricot, tropical fruit depending on origin and process
- Tea-like — a delicate, almost translucent body that feels more like a fine tea than a typical coffee
- Sweet — natural sweetness without heaviness
It's a coffee that makes experienced drinkers stop mid-sip.
Is It Worth It?
If you're looking for the most complex, distinctive cup experience available — yes. Geisha is not an everyday coffee. It's a coffee for a slow morning, a deliberate brew, a moment of attention.
If you want a reliable, satisfying daily driver — a well-sourced Kenya or Ethiopia will serve you better at a fraction of the price.
