The AeroPress is one of the most versatile and forgiving brew methods available. Here's how to get the most out of it — from grind size to the final press.
Why AeroPress?
The AeroPress was invented in 2005 by Alan Adler and has since become a cult object in the specialty coffee world. It's fast, portable, nearly indestructible, and capable of producing a remarkably clean, full-bodied cup. There's even a World AeroPress Championship held annually.
Its key advantage: total control. You can adjust every variable — grind, dose, water temperature, steep time, pressure — to dial in exactly the cup you want.
What You'll Need
- AeroPress Coffee Maker (standard or Go)
- Freshly roasted coffee (15–18g)
- Burr grinder
- Kettle (gooseneck preferred)
- Scale
- Timer
- Your favourite mug
The Standard Recipe (SOLO Method)
Dose: 15g coffee | Water: 250ml at 93°C | Grind: Medium-fine | Total time: ~2 minutes
- Rinse the filter with hot water and assemble the AeroPress in standard position on your mug.
- Add coffee and tare your scale.
- Start timer and pour 250ml of 93°C water in a slow, even spiral. Ensure all grounds are saturated.
- Stir gently 3–4 times.
- Place the plunger on top and let steep for 1 minute 30 seconds.
- Press slowly over 30 seconds with steady, even pressure. Stop when you hear a hiss.
- Taste and adjust — too bitter? Coarser grind or lower temp. Too sour? Finer grind or higher temp.
The Inverted Method
The inverted method gives you more control over steep time by preventing early drip-through. Flip the AeroPress upside down, add coffee and water, steep, then carefully flip onto your mug and press. It's slightly more theatrical but produces a fuller extraction.
Which SOLO Coffees Shine on AeroPress?
- Hongera Kent AA — the AeroPress amplifies its bright acidity and blackcurrant clarity. Use 92°C for maximum brightness.
- Geisha do Brasil — use a slightly lower temp (88–90°C) and a coarser grind to preserve the delicate florals.
- Nyala Guji Heirloom — the inverted method works beautifully here, drawing out the wine-like body and stone fruit.
A Note on Freshness
The AeroPress is unforgiving of stale coffee. Use beans roasted within the last 2–4 weeks for best results. All SOLO coffees are roasted to order and include the roast date on every bag.
