Sourced from Kariani Coffee Factory in Murang'a, this washed Arabica brings together Ruiru 11, SL28 and SL34, grown by smallholder farmers at approximately 1,500 metres above sea level.

In the cup, tropical fruit meets the floral character of hibiscus, followed by white chocolate and honey sweetness. An expressive profile to explore slowly through your favourite filter brew.

Along the slopes of Mount Kinangop and the Aberdare Range, rich red volcanic soils and a cool, humid climate create a distinctive setting for coffee cultivation. Murang'a is one of Kenya's traditional coffee-growing origins, where small family plots and cooperative washing stations are central to the region's coffee culture.

The people behind Kariani

Established in 1968, Kariani Coffee Factory is part of Thanga-ini Farmers' Cooperative Society, an organization with more than 5,350 active members. Over 600 farmers deliver their cherries to Kariani, typically tending smallholdings of 200–300 coffee trees. Strict selection at reception means only very ripe, deep-red cherries are accepted.

Washed processing, carefully handled

After delivery, the cherries are pulped using a disc pulper, then fermented in tanks for approximately 12–24 hours, depending on temperature. The coffee is cleaned and soaked before being transferred to raised African drying beds.

Drying takes approximately 10–22 days, depending on the weather and the volume being processed. During this time, the parchment is gently turned and hand-sorted to encourage even drying. Kariani also recirculates processing water to reduce consumption, sourcing water from the Kangunu stream.

Chosen by SOLO Brewing as a filter coffee option, Muranga is an invitation to explore this Kenyan origin through your daily brewing ritual. Available in limited quantities, in 200g and 1kg whole-bean bags.

Coffee Details

Country: Kenya
Region: Murang'a
Factory: Kariani Coffee Factory
Cooperative: Thanga-ini Farmers' Cooperative Society
Producer: Smallholder farmers
Species: Arabica
Varietal: Ruiru 11, SL28, SL34
Process: Washed
Altitude: Approximately 1,500 MASL
Drying: Raised African beds
Selected for: Filter coffee
Tasting Notes: Tropical fruit, hibiscus, white chocolate, honey
